Mastering is the final stage where a song takes its true final shape, it is the moment where the musical intention becomes a finished, emotionally coherent experience. After more than 25 years in recording, mixing, and mastering on both sides of the Atlantic, I’ve learned that the quality of a master is determined not only by tools, but by perspective, empathy, and the ability to understand the story inside the music.

Stereo Mastering vs. Stem Mastering
What’s the difference — and which is better?
Stereo Mastering (Traditional Mastering)
You send me one single stereo mix. I treat it as the final artistic vision of yours and your mix engineer.
Pros:
- The stereo mix preserves artistic intention the best way, as the mix already reflects your decisions.
- It is always more cohesive: the balance and the tone have been shaped as a whole.
- It is faster and more affordable; there are fewer variables, and more efficiency.
- It is ideal for most productions — especially when the mix is already strong.
Cons:
- Limited ability to fix large mixing issues (though subtle corrections are still often possible). If you send to me the mix, I will always evaluate it for free, and point to the problems that should be corrected at the mixing stage.
Stem Mastering
You send grouped stems (drums, bass, vocals, guitars, keys, FX, etc.). I master the song while having limited control over groups of instruments.
Pros:
- Can fix mix imbalances more precisely.
- Useful when the mix is not fully translating to various listening places, or the space isn’t treated well.
- Gives mastering engineer more flexibility.
Cons:
- It begins to overlap with mixing, and it may unintentionally reshape your artistic choices.
- It is more expensive and more time-consuming.
- Can introduce phase issues if stems aren't prepared correctly, so it is important to prepare the stems very well.
- It’s not ideal if you already love your mix.
My personal philosophy:
If the mix represents your artistic vision, stereo mastering will always give you better emotional translation.
Mastering is about enhancing, not rewriting history.
The more the mastering engineer has to “rebuild” the mix, the greater the risk of losing what made the mix special in the first place.I recommend stem mastering only when it's truly needed — not as the default approach.
For Stereo Mastering:
- Export at 24-bit or 32-bit float, WAV or AIFF.
- No limiter on the master bus (unless it’s essential to your sound, and in that case send two versions: with and without limiting).
- Peaks ideally between –6 dB and –3 dB.
- No normalization.
- Include tempo and reference mixes (optional).
For Stem Mastering send grouped stems such as:
- Drums / Percussion
- Bass
- Instruments (Guitars / Keys / Synths separated if needed)
- Lead Vocal
- Backing Vocals
- FX / Atmospheres
Critical rules:
- All stems must start at the same timestamp (bar 1).
- No master-bus processing printed across stems (unless intentional).
- Avoid overlapping content: keep each stem logically separated.
- Name stems clearly.
The cleaner the preparation, the better the final master.
Analog mastering is not some nostalgia thing, it’s engineering physics.
Analogue adds what digital cannot reproduce organically:
- Depth and dimensionality
- Smoother transients
- Density without harshness
- Natural harmonic saturation
- A feeling of “air” and breath around the instruments
These are not subtle when done correctly. They are emotional and they are very distinct. The clients often describe the result as more alive, wider, more 3D, or “just feels right”.

Why Human Online Mastering Outperforms AI and Automated Tools
AI mastering services can be convenient, cheap, and fast. And it is a new trend, and people act based on the clever marketing. But the harsh reality is that AI and automated mastering services cannot do the one thing mastering requires above all:
Understand the emotional intention behind the music.
What it can do:
- AI can match curves.
- AI can raise loudness.
- AI can guess genres.
- AI can master fast
But AI cannot:
- decide why the chorus needs to open up emotionally and brings more energy to the song
- sense when and where the song needs warmth instead of brightness; power instead of softness.
- understand the story, mood, or vulnerability in the performance
- tailor the master to the artist’s identity
- assemble an album so that tracks flow naturally and support the overall story of the album
- communicate, advise, and reassure
And AI certainly cannot replicate a trained human ear listening in a world-class room with top monitoring gear.
Automated tools and AI mastering have a place for quick demos and early references, but they cannot replace mastering as an artistic, emotional, and technical partnership.

Mastering is a process that enhances a song and prepares it for commercial format. The input of the artist is not the main ingredient here: the main ingredients are the engineer ears, the acoustic space and monitoring system and the very high-end equipment needed, ot at lease used by the best mastering studios.

So — Stereo or Stems? My Honest Recommendation
- If your mix already reflects your artistic vision, choose stereo mastering without a doubt. It will sound more cohesive and emotionally honest.
- If your mix has problems that you cannot solve, then send the stems. I will stabilize the balance and do the final passes without compromising your identity.
